Kyanite, a name derived from the Greek word kyanos, meaning "blue," is an island-structured silicate mineral with a chemical composition of Al2SiO6. This mineral belongs to the Kyanite group and shares the same crystal structure with Andalusite and Sillimanite. Kyanite deposits are mainly distributed in regional metamorphic rocks, such as schist, gneiss, and quartzite, often coexisting with other minerals such as garnet, mica, quartz, and plagioclase.
Kyanite crystals exhibit diverse morphologies, commonly appearing as flat, tabular, and columnar crystals; twinning is sometimes observed. Its color is variable, ranging from deep blue to bluish white and even greenish blue. Kyanite's hardness shows significant anisotropy, with a specific gravity between 3.53 and 3.65; therefore, it is also known as disthene.
